About Waraira Repano National Park

Waraira Repano National Park, established in 1958, protects the mountainous spine that rises dramatically above Venezuela's capital city, Caracas. Spanning the states of Vargas, Miranda, and the Distrito Capital, the park preserves a unique range of tropical and cloud forests home to diverse flora and fauna, including many endemic bird species. The park's highest peak, El Ávila (also called Cerro Waraira Repano), stands at approximately 2,765 meters (9,075 feet), offering spectacular vistas over the city and the Caribbean coastline. The park is a critical ecological refuge in a highly urbanized area, providing oxygen and natural beauty for millions of residents. Popular recreation includes hiking trails like the Calvario and El Ávila routes that lead to iconic landmarks such as the Humboldt Hotel and the teleférico (cable car) stations. Visitors enjoy birdwatching opportunities with species such as the Venezuelan Trogon and Red-shouldered Macaw, as well as peaceful picnic areas and panoramic overlooks. The park also holds cultural significance as a traditional gathering place for Caracas locals and indigenous peoples historically connected to the mountain. Easily accessible from the city, Waraira Repano National Park offers an important mix of natural escape and urban proximity, drawing hikers, nature lovers, and photographers year-round.
